Organizational Ethics Consortium: “Intellectual Disability and Access to Organ Transplantation"

Just a few weeks ago, a NEJM editorial called attention to the central issue to be taken up at this Organizational Ethics Consortium, which in turn draws on a recent article by the presenters and their colleagues in the American Journal of Transplantation.

On February 24, the consortium will address "Intellectual Disability and Access to Organ Transplantation."

Given the shortage of organs for patients who could benefit from transplantation, the question of who should be eligible for the procedure is vitally important. One debate has centered on the role of developmental disability in patient selection.

Daniel Kamin, MD and Dawn Freiberger, NP will describe the thoughtful process by which the Boston Children's Hospital developed a policy for its transplant program.

Brian Cummings, MD from Massachusetts General Hospital will open the discussion as commentator.

The meeting will extend our exploration of the different ways in which the health system can best address questions of organizational ethics.
