Native North Sider George Castle, now a north suburban resident, grew up in the cheap seats ($1 Wrigley Field bleachers admission in the early 1970s) of Chicago's ballparks. He turned an avocation into a vocation. He has covered baseball for a multi-media platform of outlets since 1980. He has authored 13 baseball books. the latest being "Baseball Game Changers" and "Jackie Robinson West."  He crafted scoops on Cubs management and players for not only area newspapers, but also his longest book, "The Million To One Team," in 2000. And for 17 years until 2010, he hosted and produced "Diamond Gems," a syndicated weekly one-hour baseball radio show.

Summary of books:

George Castle's "Baseball Game Changers" and "Jackie Robinson West" are the one-two punch of his summer-game work in 2013. They bring his career total to 13 books since 1998. In "Game Changers," Castle ranks the top 50 persons, events and innovations that have changed baseball, for better or worse. The book is meant to provoke argument about how to rank these and others. In "Jackie Robinson West," Castle looks at the backstory of the Far South Side Little League program that garnered the national championship in 2014 and won over the entire country. But in a tragic twist befitting the crazy-quilt history of Chicago baseball, JRW had its title stripped months later due to the malfeasance of its adult leaders. In addition to the team itself, Castle profiles the 1970-vintage origins of its neighborhood, in which residents banned together to purge crime from the area and make a youth baseball program possible.
