Critically acclaimed Chicago-based writer Fern Schumer Chapman has written several award-winning books. Her memoir, MOTHERLAND -- a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award, and a BookSense76 pick -- is a popular choice for book clubs. Her other books, IS IT NIGHT OR DAY?, LIKE FINDING MY TWIN, and STUMBLING ON HISTORY are used in middle school classrooms. In 2004, the Illinois Association of Teachers of English (IATE) named Chapman the "Illinois Author of the Year." Twice, Oprah Winfrey shows have featured her books.

People are as terrifying as the monsters they imagine

And other insidious truths revealed through horror

In the spirit of Halloween and all things that go bump in the night, please join us for a spooktacular evening with Heinrich von Wolfcastle - unofficial paranormal investigator, toy collector, and horror writer.

Hailing from Parts Unknown, Von Wolfcastle writes by candlelight from the seclusion of his castle in the crooked foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. But with upcoming publications in Ghostlight: The Magazine of Terror, Nicole’s Recurring Nightmares, and Erie Tales XII: Cannibals, Wolfcastle will emerge from the shadows on Monday, October 28th, to share his enthusiasm for the macabre at Max & Benny’s.

Von Wolfcastle unleashed his first works upon the world as a collection of short horror stories called Screams Before Dawn. Called “an engaging page turner,” by Scream magazine, the ghouls and ghosts you will find there, as well as the grim places and people they haunt, will creep their way into your nightmares… and your heart. In “She Said Her Name Was Spookie,” a misogynistic politician finds himself being eaten alive as he lets his lust for a succubus consume him. “Bird's the Word” follows an angry and gangly teenage boy too stubborn to ask for help, and, fittingly, the surly Bird gets the worm. The sons of the grave digging Grebert family come to realize that they'll need to dig even deeper if they want to keep their business alive in “Vultures of the Aftermath.” The xenophobic and misanthropic tension builds in each successive story until it bursts during “The Last Day on Earth.” The collection concludes with “Ambassadors of Ambrosia,” where a privileged social outcast is confronted with the dreadful truth that all are equal in the eyes of death. The dastardly details of these stories and more await you. Join us. Be one of us. Boo!
