TARGET AUDIENCE AND ACCREDITATION INFORMATION

This symposium is an application-based offering designed for nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, certified diabetes educators, and other healthcare professionals involved in the education and care of people with diabetes.

Requirements:
To successfully complete the program and receive credit, participants must pay the required fee, sign the attendance roster, attend the entire program, and complete the evaluation form.

Accreditation Statement:
The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) is the accredited provider for continuing education as indicated below.

AADE approval of programs or materials does not constitute endorsement of a provider, program, or material. In addition, approval of this educational offering by AADE does not imply endorsement of specific therapies, treatments, or products discussed in the presentations. 

Nurses:
AADE is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This program provides 6.0 contact hours of continuing education credit. The AADE is also accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CEP# 10977). AADE is an Iowa Board of Nursing approved provider #366. For Iowa nurses:  AADE awards this program 7.2 contact hours or .72 CEUs (1 contact hour = 50 minutes or 0.1 CEUs). A certificate of attendance must be retained by the licensee for a period of four years.

Pharmacists:
AADE is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of pharmacy education. This program provides 6.0 contact hours (.6 CEU’s) of continuing education credit. ACPE Universal Activity Number: 0069-9999-17-296-L01-P -- Effective Date: November 3, 2017 to November 3, 2018.

Dietitians:
AADE (AM001) is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). CDR Credentialed Practitioners will receive 6.0 Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEUs) for completion of this activity / materials. Continuing Professional Education Provider Accreditation does not constitute endorsement by CDR of a provider, program, or materials.

 

Certified Diabetes Educators:
To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the NCBDE list of Approved Providers (www.ncbde.org). NCBDE does not approve continuing education. The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) is on the NCBDE list of Approved Providers.

Continuing Education (CE) Statements of Credit will be available at the end of the conference for those who meet the requirements.

LEARNING OUTCOME / OBJECTIVES

Symposium attendees will have increased knowledge of the specified content areas presented and will, therefore, choose at least one concept / practice area / technique or tool that they will utilize to enhance the care and or education for individuals with or at risk for diabetes.

This symposium will enable participants to: 

  1. Discuss the pathophysiology of the different types of diabetes including Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults (LADA), Double Diabetes and Steroid-Induced Hyperglycemia.
  2. List the 2017 updates to the diabetes management guidelines as outlined by the American Diabetes Association.
  3. Describe how to use the different classes of diabetes medications individually or in combination to achieve optimal glucose control including new medications, warnings and breakthroughs.
  4. Review glucose patterns and determine how to adjust therapy to improve glucose in the outpatient and inpatient setting.
  5. List strategies related to the gut microbiome to help people with or at risk for diabetes nourish their body to maintain optimal health.
