Art was my first love. As a young child, I pored over my grandmother's books filled with art prints. My early exposure to art taught me to see stunning richness in ordinary things.
At age four, I won a prize in the local children's parade for my tricycle float, which was decorated with my drawings. In elementary school, teachers praised the personality they saw in my work. I executed many commissions for my elementary school peers, earning censure from my third-grade teacher for "drawing all the time."
I gradually moved away from making visual art and acting became my passion. 25 years ago, I realized I wanted and needed to paint, following a life-changing trip to Italy. I taught myself how to paint and haven’t stopped making art since. I also discovered the joy of encouraging and teaching others to discover or rekindle their creative passions.
I’m a third generation native Oregonian. I live in Portland where I offer art workshops, creativity groups, and individual art coaching. I exhibit and sell work in galleries and online and teach workshops around the U.S. and Europe. My articles and work have appeared in many books and magazines in the U.S. I’m the author of the books, Wabi-Sabi Art Workshop and Wabi-Sabi Painting with Cold Wax, published by North Light.

Complex Simplicity
Complex simplicity refers to a piece that is simple in composition while it also contains layers of color and texture underneath the top layers. These layers make the difference between a flat, uninteresting piece and a vibrant, alive, work that intrigues the viewer. You’ll discover the magic of complex simplicity in this experimental workshop! I’ll show you techniques to layer and texture your work, materials for atmospheric pieces, and how to loosen up and create with enjoyment.
We’ll explore texture methods, layering, color choices, and composition. We’ll use plaster over gesso as a base for your work. We’ll incorporate palette knife work, marble dust, sand, acrylic paints, inks, stencils, collage elements, and mark-making with various tools. I’ll provide you with a PDF booklet that includes images of various techniques.
This workshop will free you to experiment with confidence. You can add and subtract elements all the way through, so no worries about “mistakes.” Some lovely things can happen accidentally, and changes are easy to make. We’ll have demonstrations, time to work, and time for sharing and questions. The process of interacting with your materials in an open and exploratory way will lead you to pieces you love.
