Kindling a love of reading  using reading ladders

Reading ladders help take our students        from where they are (always begin with   where they are) closer to where we would like them to be.  In short, it helps  guide them to more and more complex (not just longer or more difficult) texts.  Reading ladders can be designed to explore a theme or an author or a genre, form, or format.  They can provide much needed support as students grow into lifelong readers and learners.

Breakout: Using apps to kindle enthusiasm in readers

How can we combine the new technologies with our goals for literacy?  This session will examine some simple apps that will allow readers to go beyond the pages of a book.  Bring your iPad along and explore some applications.

Friday Keynote

Penny Kittle, Author of Write Beside Them & Book Love

Book Love: Building Reading Lives that Last

We must put engagement at the heart of our teaching. We must know our students as readers and as people. We will explore ways to connect adolescent readers to books that will name their hearts and help all students develop a reading habit to increase stamina, joy, and independence.

Breakout Session:  How Writing Notebooks Anchor Workshop Teaching

A notebook filled with quick writing and collecting can drive thinking in a writing workshop. We will quick write together and practice rereading techniques that help students find the heart of their work. We'll practice small steps in revision and how to use our raw thinking as a model for writers. Come to study, write, and share together.
