Reducing the Risk of Sexual Abuse in People with Disabilities

Individuals with ASD and Developmental Disabilities want the same opportunities for relationships as their peers and their siblings; but their vulnerability and their social skills often find them in unsafe situations. This presentation will give you tips, tools, statistics and stories to help you support and protect these individuals.

Terri Couwenhaven, M.S. and Pam Malin, Disabilities Specialist

Terri Couwenhoven, M.S. is an ASSECT certified sexuality educator who specializes in developing programs and resources for people who have cognitive disabilities, their
families and the professionals who support them.  She is the author of Teaching Children with Down syndrome about their Bodies, Boundaries and Sexuality: A Guide for Parents and Professionals, The Girls’ Guide to Growing Up: Choices and Changes in the Tween Years and
A Boy’s Guide to Growing Up: Choices & Changes during Puberty.

When she is not teaching or writing, she is Clinic Coordinator for the Down Syndrome Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She is the mother of two girls, her oldest daughter has Down syndrome.

Pam Malin is a Disabilities Consultant and the Owner/Director of C.A.R.E.S. LLC (Consultation…Advocacy…Resources…Education…Support) Pam has worked in the disability and anti-violence fields for over 30 years.  She is a presenter at the local, state and national level on the topic of Sexual Assault and People with Disabilities, Healthy Relationships, Boundaries and Multi-Disciplinary Response to Victims of Abuse with Disabilities.

She is committed to sharing her knowledge and expertise with Sexual Assault Service
Providers, Community Professionals, Parents and Caregivers.  Pam is passionate about advocating for people with disabilities living a fulfilling and inclusive life including; healthy
relationships, self-determination and safety.
