Safety at Sea Seminars in Annapolis

Please join us April 1 and 2 for the 41st annual Safety at Sea Seminar in Annapolis.

The 2023 US Naval Academy Safety at Sea Seminar on April 1 & 2, 2023 will focus on safety and seamanship suitable for inshore and offshore racing and cruising sailors. The live, on-the-water demonstrations and man overboard rescue demonstrations for the US Sailing course on Saturday are unmatched in this country. The Safety at Sea Seminar in Annapolis is our 41st edition and will be held in Alumni Hall and at other locations within the US Naval Academy.

Course offerings are as follows:  

US Sailing Offshore Sailing Course (April 1)

A US Sailing Certificate, valid for 5 years, can be obtained by attending Saturday (April 1) only. The course is a full day and the cost is $185.

International Offshore Course with Hands-on Training (April 1&2)

THIS COURSE IS FULL FOR 2023.  YOU CAN JOIN THE WAITING LIST IN REGISTER NOW (BELOW). The 2-day International Offshore Hands-on Course April 1st in Alumni Hall and cover US Sailing required topics. The hands-on portion of the class will be on April 2nd.  The cost of the 2-day course with a certificate is $435.

International Offshore Hands-on Only Training (April 2)

THIS COURSE IS FULL FOR 2023.  YOU CAN JOIN THE WAITING LIST IN REGISTER NOW (BELOW). The April 2nd Hands-on Only Training can only result in a valid certificate if the participant has completed Units 1 - 15 of Safety at Sea Online OR has attained an Offshore Certificate within the last 365 days. The cost for the hands-on only training is $300.

Cruising Course (April 1&2)

The Cruising Course includes the full day Saturday (April 1) training and hands-on training (April 2.) Note that this course is designed for cruisers and does not result in a US Sailing Certificate. $320 per person.

One-Day Cruising Course (April 2)

A one-day version of the Cruisers Course is now available for $135 per person. Morning classes include information on communications, electronic navigation, voyage planning and wind/waves and current. In the afternoon choose either hands-on training in the pool or an interactive course taught by Cruising Club of America P/C Sheila McCurdy.

Saturday training for the US Sailing Offshore Certificate includes:

  • Damage Prevention and Control
  • Weather Forecasting and Features
  • Handling Heavy Weather and Storm Sails,
  • Emergency Medical Care and Hypothermia
  • Heavy Weather and Storm Sails
  • MOB Prevention and Recovery
  • USCG Communications and SAR

The Hands-On Training includes:

  • Lessons Learned & Updates: Lessons learned from recent incidents. Updates on important safety requirements and communications items.
  • Damage Control: The course covers typical damage control techniques and equipment.
  • Firefighting and Emergency Signaling (Flares):  This session discusses fire prevention and firefighting and review of flares. 
  • Safety Equipment: This session will review standard emergency, safety and personal equipment.
  • PFD’s, Water Survival, and Life Rafts: This session will start with reviewing the proper wearing of your PFD and tether. You will then enter the pool with your foul weather gear and PFD to experience the inflation and use of your PFD. You will practice righting, boarding, and working as a crew in a life raft.
  • USCG Communications and SAR:  Covers emergency communications and USCG Search and Rescue.    

 Advanced reservations are encouraged. Fee includes a boxed lunch. No refunds after March 15, 2023.  Please complete separate forms for all attendees. Due to security measures at the U. S. Naval Academy, please provide complete contact information.

Certificates earned will be emailed to the address you provide us here within a few weeks of completing the course.  The emails will come directly from US Sailing.
