Preventing Pain: The Science of Anesthesiology
Anesthesia is a state of induced temporary loss of sensation or awareness. Advances in anesthesia have allowed the painless performance of all kinds of medical procedures that would cause severe or intolerable pain to a patient to become pretty mainstream: think about what getting a tooth pulled or having your tonsils taken out would have involved 200 years ago. Our Café speaker is a physician who’s patients probably never remember her, although her extremely important job as an anesthesiologist keeps them safe and comfortable in the operating room while undergoing surgery. Dr. Sara Cheng will tell us about her profession and her fascinating specialty—anesthesia for patients undergoing liver transplants.
