Clinical Difficulties in the Treatment of

 Dual Eating Disorders/Chemical Dependency Patients

Patients who have both eating disorder and chemical dependency issues represent up to 40% of patients who come into treatment.  This combination of disorders presents a unique challenge to the treatment team and to the institutions designed to provide care. It is imperative to fully examine the histories and clinical presentations of both the eating disorder and the chemical dependency individually and in combination.  When both disorders are present, the clinical presentation may appear uniquely different than usual presentation of either disorder independently.  Treatment providers need to be savvy to the difficulties that may present in treatment, and to the necessary ongoing support resources required for successful recovery over time.  This talk will examine some of these complicating factors and how clinicians and programs can most successfully engage the patient in change and how they can provide the most comprehensive treatment possible.

About the Presenter: 

Terry V. Dr. Eagan is an internationally respected physician, lecturer and consultant.  An expert in Professional Ethics and Compassion Fatigue, Dr. Eagan has guided training programs for individual practitioners, multinational corporations, public school systems, community health centers, law enforcement agencies, hospitals, and universities.  He has been involved in numerous psychopharmacology studies for eight international pharmaceutical companies and he lectures on psychopharmacology to physicians across the United States.
