Grief, Loss, and Addiction

Presented by: Jessica Thomas, PhD, LMFT

Addiction can surface in the experience of grief as an attempt to numb the emotional pain and suffering from the death of someone close to us. It can also be used to distract or mediate feelings of depression associated with other losses. In addition, the experience of grief and loss can accompany the surrender of addiction as one learns new ways of being and relating to self and other.

This workshop presentation will discuss various types of losses and their association with addiction- complicated grief, stigmatized loss, traumatic loss and anticipatory loss. We will examine Western Society's orientation toward grief and loss, and discuss how it might provoke addiction and hinder the healing process. We will discuss ways we might use this knowledge to promote transformative growth.

About the Presenter:

Jessica Thomas, PhD, LMFT holds a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and a PhD in Psychology with an emphasis in Transpersonal Psychology. She is a therapist, clinical supervisor and organizational consultant that specializes in death, dying, grief and loss at her private practice Reflective Therapy & Consulting LLC. She has been a hospice volunteer for over six years and a volunteer for PDX Death Cafe- a movement working to open up the discussion of death in the greater community. Dr. Thomas currently serves on the board of the NW Association for Death Education and Bereavement Support. As an adjunct professor at Lewis and Clark College, she teaches on death, loss and psychospiritual crises. Dr. Thomas’s doctoral research titled "Mindful Photography and its Implications in End-of-life Caregiving: An Art-based Phenomenology" focused on creative expression and the experience of anticipatory loss. Jessica utilizes mindful photography as a spiritual practice and in therapy groups with those experiencing grief and loss.
