ABOUT the COG RAILWAY/ MOUNT WASHINGTON OBSERVATORY
PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
New Hampshire’s Mount Washington is the highest peak in the northeastern United States. This mountain is our location for this one-of-a-kind photography workshop presented in partnership with the COG RAILWAY and the Mount. Washington Observatory by professional photographer and photo educator Dan Splaine.
Join us on September 10, 2012 for a day of photography, exploration, learning and fun on the summit of Mount Washington.
This one day photo workshop includes a photo class session, travel to the summit on the historic Cog Railway, a guided tour of the weather station and so much more. The standard stop-over time on the summit is usually limited to only one hour when your ride the Cog. Our day will feature FOUR HOURS ON THE SUMMIT to explore this remarkable location with our cameras.
The photo workshop is open to photographers of all experience levels* and will cover a range of photography skills with an emphasis on LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY. The summit of Mount Washington is known for its majestic views (on a clear day you can see more than 100 miles!) and is one of the most dramatic locations in the country for making LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY.
The weather, the light and the terrain work together to provide a beautiful and very dynamic location for challenging your creative photography skills!
The Mount Washington Observatory is a working weather station and this workshop includes a 30 minute guided tour of this historic facility with an observatory educator. Photographer Dan Splaine will lead the 45 minute class session at Marshfield Station (8:30 am start) prior to your ascent trip on the COG and he will be on hand for photography coaching throughout your summit experience.
Registration includes a WORKSHOP PREPARATION & STUDY GUIDE, a PDF booklet, which will be sent to you via email prior to our trip. It includes information about photo equipment selection, and photo skills to review and suggestions for photo techniques that you can use during your summit visit.
* Minimum age is 16 years old. Any minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian.

Mount Washington is noted for its dynamic weather conditions and this workshop will proceed rain or shine. Refunds will only be provided in the extremely unlikely event the Cog Railway cancels operations on the day of our workshop. Weather is a photographer’s friend! On the summit you will likely encounter fast changing and dramatic conditions for photography. Those dynamic conditions are a feature of this workshop that we hope you will prepare for and embrace.
This workshop will be lead by professional photographer and photo educator Dan Splaine. Dan has more than 30 years experience shooting commercial and editorial photography assignments around the world and throughout the U.S. and has more than ten years experience teaching photography. A travel and location photography specialist, he has photographed in locations ranging from the Himalayas to tropical rainforests.
In the fall of 2009 he started presenting a digital photography education program at his studio, TEST of TIME PHOTOGRAPHY in Nashua NH. Since that time, more than 1100 people have attended his photography workshops and photographer tours. His objective is to help other photographers build their knowledge and skills so they can deliberately achieve creative photographic results.
