Looking for experienced sailboat racers to join the Fire Island Classics.
Maybe the most civilized sailboat racing in North America. Depart Bayshore, NY at 10 am for a sail to Point of Woods on Fire Island. Sailors are divided into teams. Famous South Shore breezes kick in as the fleet circles the boat basin. Hunt signals the release of the fleet in a pursuit race format. Off go the Herreshoff 12s followed by the Moonbeams, Thistles and Kidd.
In a pursuit race the faster boats start last and try to run down the early starters. All the boats finish through the entrance to the basin at almost the same time. Pack up the boats and it is off to the ocean beach for a swim. A sail back across Great South Bay and return to Bayshore around 6. It is a full day of fun in the sun. If this is too long a day there is a 11 am motor boat to Point of Woods and a 4 pm return for those not swimming.
