Intersections Between Stalking and Homicide

Please join NYSCADV and the National Center for Victims of Crime's Stalking Resource Center for Intersections Between Stalking and Homicide in Albany, NY.  

Stalking is a complex and dynamic crime that often escalates to more serious violence, including homicide. In this interactive training, we will explore the risk factors associated with stalking, including the intersection with intimate partner violence, and methods for assessing risk. We will also discuss how victim service providers can collaborate with law enforcement and prosecutors to help build stalking cases that will lead to enhanced victim safety and offender accountability. 

PRESENTERS

NYSCADV is pleased to announce that the following presenters from the Stalking Resource Center will be joining us for Intersections Between Stalking and Homicide.

Elaina Roberts is the Program Attorney for the Stalking Resource Center of the National Center for Victims of Crime. She provides technical assistance and training on all aspect of stalking to law enforcement, prosecutors, victim service providers, and other professionals. She also conducts legal research and analysis on current state and federal stalking laws, case law, and legislation. Prior to joining the SRC, Elaina was an Assistant District Attorney in Albuquerque, NM where she prosecuted cases in the Violent Crimes, Community Crimes, and Metro Divisions.  She is licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia, New Mexico, and Texas. Elaina obtained her J.D. from Baylor Law School and her B.S. in Psychology from Texas Christian University.       

Michelle Garcia joined the Stalking Resource Center at the National Center for Victims of Crime in April 2006 and has served as the Director of the Stalking Resource Center since October 2006. 

Prior to joining the National Center, Michelle was a Program Specialist with the U.S. Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime. She has over twenty years of experience working with victims of stalking, sexual assault, and domestic violence in both rural, suburban, and urban settings and advocating for victims’ rights on a local, state, and national level.

Michelle has trained internationally on various topics, including stalking, sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and dismantling oppression. She has contributed numerous pieces on stalking to publications, including The Police Chief, NIJ Journal, and the Encyclopedia of Victimology and Crime Prevention, and has appeared as an expert on stalking in numerous media outlets, including C-SPAN, HuffPost Live, and Fox News.

Michelle currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Sexual Assault Report and the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence. Michelle received her Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Chicago.

LOGISTICS

Food:

Food and Drink will NOT be provided during this event. Please tend to your food  and drink needs before you arrive. Attendees will be provided a one hour lunch break. There are a number of easily accessible food options in and near the location.

Parking:

Limited free parking is available in the hotel parking lot (entrance on Holland Avenue). Once the hotel lot is full, there are two parking garages available - one on New Scotland Avenue and one on Holland Avenue. The maximum daily fee for both garages is $6.00. Metered street parking is also available on New Scotland and Holland Avenues.
