Critical Incident Stress Management: Psychological First Aid & Group Crisis Intervention 

Please join NYSCADV and the International Critical Incident Stress Management Foundation for two trainings: a one day Psychological First Aid training and a two day Group Crisis Intervention training. These trainings will help leadership at domestic violence programs prepare to support staff & survivors in times of community crisis or disaster.

Participants can choose to attend one or both of the trainings. See below for training descriptions.

PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID

(One day training - 12/13)

(Registration 8:30 AM; Training 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM)

Psychological First Aid has been recommended by the World Health Organization, the US Institute of Medicine, and the International Red Cross. Psychological First Aid may be thought of as the most fundamental aspect of applied crisis intervention. This course is designed to introduce participants to the basic knowledge and intervention techniques associated with the practice of Psychological First Aid. In addition, this information can serve as the essential platform upon which more advanced individual and group crisis and disaster interventions can be built.

GROUP CRISIS INTERVENTION

(Two day training - 12/14 & 12/15)

(Registration 8:30 AM; Training 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM)

Using a comprehensive, systematic and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum, the Group Crisis Intervention course will prepare participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services. Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) will be outlined and participants will leave with the knowledge and tools to provide several group crisis interventions, specifically demobilizations, defusings and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary will also be discussed.

TRAINER BIO

Peter Volkmann, MSW graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Mercy College and received his Masters in Social Work from Fordham University. Peter is the east coast liaison coordinator and a representative to the United Nations for the ICISF. Peter is also the state coordinator for the CISM network of New York State. Because of his vast experience in the different rescue fields and the social work profession, Peter is utilized as a crisis interventionist and trainer for rescue departments, government municipalities, schools, and corporate organizations around the United States who have experienced traumatic events. Peter has been featured as an expert on stress for Dateline (NBC), Discovery Channel, MSNBC, and Law Enforcement Television Network (LETN). Peter developed “Law Enforcement Perspectives Course for CISM Enhancement” which is an approved course of ICISF. He has trained and assisted the startup of numerous critical incident response teams throughout the eastern United States. Peter is a retired police officer and emergency medical technician with the Town of Ossining, New York Police Department. Peter maintains a private practice in Columbia County, New York in which he specializes in trauma counseling with a concentration in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

Space is limited, and we anticipate this training will fill up quickly. We want to remind everyone that 2016 NYSCADV Member Programs receive priority registration to all NYSCADV events and trainings. COST

This training is free of charge but all attendees are responsible for their own transportation, lodging and meals.

DINING INFORMATION

Food and drink will NOT be provided during this training. Please tend to your food and drink needs before you arrive. Attendees will be provided a lunch break. There are a number of easily accessible food options within and adjacent to the training location.
