Course Descriptions:

Asserting Ethical Decision Making in the Treatment Room and Beyond

Jill Cole, Instructor (3 CE hours)

This class will examine the unique ethical decision-making components of massage therapy and identify tools to help in asserting the clinical voice. We will discuss various communication styles and how to recognize and clarify delicate matters that may affect a massage practice. Special considerations will be given to social media, oncology and transgender clients, as well as boundary setting. Given the ways in which we are connected to our clients outside of the treatment room, with technology, it is also important to consider our rapid availability via the smart phone, texting, emails, social media and the like, and what our technological boundary settings may be. This 3-hour class will utilize lecture materials, small group and reflective exercises to practice asserting ethical decisions.

 Materials Needed: Pen and paper

Meet the Instructors:

Jill Cole is a Licensed Massage Therapist in the state of Kentucky and is Board Certified by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Jill is a 1998 graduate of the Boulder College of Massage Therapy and has served as past-president of the American Massage Therapy Association- KY Chapter. Jill has vast experience both in massage therapy education and in the clinical setting. She is the current Director of Education at the Lexington Healing Arts Academy (LHAA) in Lexington, KY, serves on the National Education Committee for the Society for Oncology Massage, and teaches a 100-hour, hospital-based oncology massage program at LHAA. Jill also maintains a private massage therapy practice in Lexington, KY and in her spare time, enjoys hiking with her cattle-dog mix Maddie, biking and running through the Bluegrass, and reading about hot topics and mindless entertainment alike.

Beth Goshorn decided to pursue a career in Massage Therapy after receiving an early retirement incentive package from Cincinnati Bell in 1995. She had already completed a B.A. Business Administration Degree at Thomas More College but was interested in a hands-on experience. After several part-time jobs & additional classes at NKU, she chose the 18- month Massage Therapy program at SHI in Lebanon, OH. In April of 2001 Beth graduated from SHI, successfully passed her Ohio State Boards & began her private practice in July of 2001. She received her KY license in June, 2005 & maintains her licensing in both states.

Beth loves her second career & especially loves teaching her clients about their wondrous bodies. Via continuing education & experience with a wide array of clients over 16 years, Beth has numerous tools in her massage toolbox.  Beth has worked with many elderly clients, overstressed white collar & blue collar workers, people weary from living with chronic pain, or recovering from traumatic injury. She facilitates wellness by helping clients remove roadblocks, listening to their bodies & encouraging self-care.

Beth has been active with the KY Chapter of AMTA, volunteering when able but has been more limited in the past year due to some health challenges in her family. Beth has also mentored many new massage therapists & served on the Advisory board for Gateway's Massage Therapy program in Covington, KY for several years.

Beth's quest for learning & belief in the benefits of massage therapy has inspired her to become an Accredited Infant Massage Instructor for Baby's First Massage, which she attained in early 2016. Over the past year she has volunteered monthly at First Step House in Walnut Hills to empower expectant and new mothers in their addiction recovery program teaching infant massage to nurture their newborns & learn about HEALTHY intentional touch. Beth has found this teaching experience enlightening & rewarding…it has helped enhance her regular practice. Beth is excited to share what she has learned & to learn from her students as she teaches this special edition of "Baby's First Massage.” ENJOY the Journey!
