Creative Placemaking Speaker Series: Maria Rosario Jackson

The topic of creative placemaking - in which public & private partnerships use arts, culture, and creativity activities to strategically shape the physical and social character of a place - has come to the forefront of conversation around the future of Austin. The Cultural Arts Division invites you to a series of public events to learn more about the topic and how it can be applied here in Austin.

Maria Rosario Jackson

Speaker: Maria Rosario Jackson
Dr. Jackson is an expert in community revitalization, the roles and measurement of arts and culture in communities, and the dynamics of race and ethnicity in cities. Her work, based on more than 20 years of research, appears in a wide range of publications and presentations she’s made at scores of national and international conferences. She serves on the board of, or is an advisor to, numerous initiatives, programs, governmental agencies, and foundations. In her role as the director of the Culture, Creativity and Communities Program at the Urban Institute for eighteen years she led research on measuring cultural vitality and the role of arts and culture in community revitalization, the development of art spaces, and support systems for artists. Jackson will share her thoughts on creative placemaking – how to think about place in an authentic way that adds value to existing communities.

Doors will open at 6:30 pm for a reception, presentation will begin at 7 pm. Free parking is available at the Asian American Resource Center.

This event is supported in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.
