TOPIC: The Ins and Outs of S Corps

Seminar Description: Are more and more of your clients organized as S Corps or asking you whether they should become an S Corp?  Learn the ins and outs of S Corp taxation at this  full-day seminar. 

After a review of the basics of S Corps, elections, basis, and operational errors, we’ll take a deep dive into S Corp tax returns.  We’ll discuss setting up the corporation, how to handle typical situations and problems, the importance of double entry accounting and a case study of a new S Corp client who really doesn't understand what they have gotten themselves into. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand basics of S Corps vs. C corps, foreign and domestic corporations, stock and debt basis, etc.
  • Learn how to deal with common problems such as poor records, incorrect prior year returns, no balance sheet, and no officer salary.
  • Understand how to set up an S Corp tax return correctly, including wages, distributions, home office, autos, and health insurance
  • Understand the importance of Schedules L, M1 and M2 and how to use them to your advantage

John Sheeley, EA

John Sheeley's career as a tax practitioner began in 1987.   After completing a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Oswego in 1990, he spent twelve years as a multi-unit franchisee of a national tax chain.  John then spent five years working for a large regional accounting firm, where he divided his time between representing clients in sales & use tax controversies and examinations, and tax compliance work for non-resident aliens. 
 
An Enrolled Agent since 1995, John graduated from NTPI in 2012.  Established in 2008, his current firm focuses on the needs of U.S. citizens living abroad, and non-resident alien entrepreneurs and entertainers living and working in the United States. In addition to his tax practice, John is the President of Tax Practice Pro, a nationwide provider of continuing education for enrolled agents, CPAs, attorneys and PTIN holders.
