ICCER Networking Event 

Join the Institute for Continuing Care Education & Research (ICCER) for a Networking Event on June 10th! Dr. Megan Strickfaden (Department of Human Ecology, University of Alberta) will share information on five films co-created with older adults, caregivers, staff, and students to communicate how designed things can support the aging process.  

"Giving voice to older adults through co-created films: Learning how designed things can support the aging process"

Older adults living in continuing care settings may witness or personally experience negative interactions with caregivers or medical professionals about the aging process. This event will focus on an intensive, intergenerational and meaningful co-creation process of creating films to communicate how designed things can support the aging process. Thirty-two resident artists (ages 60-101) were given voice through the development of a variety of media, including visuals and spoken word. The films produced are geared towards audiences who are (or training to be) formal or family/friend caregivers to encourage them to think about how designed things can support the aging process. To date the films have been watched a total of 1,038 times in eight countries (Canada, USA, Australia, Sweden, France, Israel, Russia & Brazil). The films will be viewed and discussed during the event! 

Participants will have the opportunity to connect with our speaker, as well as collaborate with one another over small and large group discussion. 

An opportunity to network over coffee and snacks included!

Megan Strickfaden is a Professor of Design Studies and Material Culture in the Department of Human Ecology, University of Alberta. She has built her career around solving complicated problems for people who live without sight, people who move around speedily on wheels, and/or people who are considered to process the world differently from others, including aging populations. Megan's most prominent projects are with the dementia village 'de Hogeweyk' in the Netherlands, the Brussels Metro System STIB/MIVB in Belgium, Alain Mikli International in France , and Alberta Ability Lodges Society in Canada.
