Invisible Wounds of Racial Trauma: How to Use Awareness of Race as an RC trainer

Invisible Wounds of Racial Trauma: How to Use Awareness of Race as an RC Trainer

Training Description

When we think trauma, we think sexual abuse, physical abuse, domestic violence. We rarely think about the impact of overt racism, the daily indignities and slights of living in a racialized world, and the intergenerational effects of historical traumas such as slavery. Therefore, you can't really be trauma-informed unless you are race-informed. To do this, we must unpack how we all, whites and people of color, are racially socialized and how to counteract its legacy. This webinar will take on these critically important issues and discuss how it applies to the content of Risking Connection and presenting RC trainings.

Mary Jo Harwood, LSW, DNCCM is a Program Coordinator for the Traumatic Stress Institute (TSI) of Klingberg Family Centers. Using the Risking Connection curriculum and a Whole-system Change Model, Mary Jo provides training and implementation coaching to organizations across North America on transforming their services and programs to trauma-informed care. A significant part of her 30 plus years as a licensed social worker has been spent supporting the recovery of individuals and communities post traumatic incidents. She has provided trauma-informed leadership to victim service organizations, congregate care settings, mental health providers, and served in the capacity of a trauma therapist, EMDR practitioner, and crisis responder.

Steve Brown, Psy.D., is the Director of the Traumatic Stress Institute of Klingberg Family Centers. A clinical psychologist, he is a primary architect of TSI’s internationally-recognized whole-system change process to trauma-informed care. He is a co-creator, with Dr. Courtney Baker, of the Attitudes Related to Trauma-Informed Care (ARTIC) Scale, one of the first psychometric measures of TIC. He trains professionals nationally on psychological trauma and trauma-informed care.  In addition to being a psychologist, he is a long time sexuality educator/trainer and author of Streetwise to Sex-Wise: Sexuality Education for High Risk Youth, a sexuality education curricula used internationally by agencies and schools serving high-risk youth.
