BACK by popular demand: Vagina Monologues
Friday February 16th
In honor of the 20th anniversary of the V-day campaign, Tahoe SAFE Alliance is bringing back the Vagina Monologues! This episodic play is written by Eve Enslar and delves into consenual and nonconsensual sexual experiences, body image, genital mutilation, direct and indirect encounters with reproduction, sex work, and several other topics through the eyes of women with various ages, races, sexualities and other differences. Charles Isherwood of the New York Times called the play "probably the most important piece of political theater of the last decade." In 1998, ensler and others, including Willa Shalit, a producer of the Westside Theatre production, launched V-day, a global non-profit movement working to end violence against women and girls through benefits of the Vagina Monologues.
This performance will benefit the Teen Peace Project, a youth leadership club at Truckee High School in partnership with Tahoe SAFE Alliance. Teen Peace Project's mission is to promote the practice of healthy relationships, peace and respect in the Truckee community and bring residents together to prevent and reduce the impact of intimate partner violence. February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and the local youth want to bring awareness to this through the Vagina Monologues. Come see a great performance and support the inspiring work local youth are doing to end Teen Dating Violence and create a healthy and violence free community!
men are also encouraged to attend. According to Ensler, "Men have daughters; they feel they can actively be involved because they feel they can do something to change the destiny of their daughter's lives. unless men are active allies, we'll never end violence against women and girls."
Tickets are $20/general admission and tickets are expected to sell out so purchase yours today! The event will be held on Friday February 16th at 6:00 PM at Truckee Community Arts Center 10046 Church Street, Truckee.
