ReTree Steamboat 2012

Beetle kill

The Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic hit the Northwest Colorado region full force. More than 1.5 million acres of forest in Northern Colorado and Southern Wyoming have been affected. Routt County has over a million forested acres, and about 350,000 have been affected by the beetles, killing nearly all of the mature lodgepole pine trees in our region. In our third year of planting, YVSC, with the guidance of Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) and the City of Steamboat Springs, is focused on replacing trees killed by the epidemic as well as increasing the diversity of trees on our local public lands.  Planting locations this year include:

  • Howelsen Hill and Emerald Mountain
  • The Fish Creek area in the Sanctuary neighborhood
  • Steamboat Springs School District
  • Oak Creek

On June 9, YVSC will host the event in downtown Steamboat Springs.  After planting trees at one of our planting locations, you can enjoy a BBQ, beer, and live music by Trevor G. Potter and the Rural Wreckage on the Historic Courthouse lawn.  New to the event this year, The Sustainability Expo will be held on 5th Street, in conjunction with the Farmers’ Market, and will include local artists, Beetle Kill products, logging demonstrations, cell phone recycling and lots of activities for the whole family!  Don't forget to bring your old cell phones.

In the theme of "Closing the Loop" this year, we are including an Organics Drop-off (Yard Waste) for residential homes.  Twin Enviro will be Wells Fargo Upper Parking lot from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm.  Bring your yard waste by on your way to plant trees.
