Roof Technology and Science II

16 CEHs

This two-day course is a single component of a two-part series covering, in detail, aspects of the technology and science of roofing. It features terminology and technical information regarding roof decks and structures, roof insulation, bitumen membranes, built-up and modified-bitumen membranes, and flashing systems. An understanding of heat transfer theory, moisture, thermal design, and the calculation of U factors will also be presented.

Highlights of the program include:

  • Critical aspects of roof decking and related supporting structures
  • Heat transfer and practical heat transfer calculations
  • The function of heat transfer and the different types of roof insulation
  • The technology behind roofing bitumens and their related BUR and modified-bitumen membranes
  • Basic flashing nomenclature and bituminous flashing system construction

The Roof Technology and Science I and II courses feature fundamental and advanced concepts that frequently prove useful for students who plan to enroll in other RCI Educational Programs. This course also serves well as a stand-alone course, as it provides a broad technical background for roofing industry personnel and building owners.

Speakers

Darrel Henderson, RRO has been a past presenter for RCI for the QAO, Roof Consulting Basic and Advanced Programs and Roofing Technology 1 & 2. This is his 19th time at the podium since 2000 and he really loves to share his knowledge and educate people.

He created the Fire Rated Roofing module for the continuing education program at the University of Toronto for the OBEC BSSO designation.  On occasion he is a contributing member on discussions for the Roof Consultants Alliance and the All-Experts service for the New York Daily Times.

Having more than 38 years in the business he is sometimes the go-to-guy for technical answers. His ancestors installed slate roofs in England more than 120 years ago, so you could say he has a roofing gene in his inherited DNA.

Greg Wallace: Currently a Project Manager for IRC Building Sciences Group in the Technical and Field Services Department. During his nearly 20 years as a roofing consultant, Greg has gained experience in every phase of roofing projects, from preliminary assessments, to plans and specifications, and supervision of work. Greg holds a Bachelor of Engineer Science from the University of Western Ontario, has been qualified as a roofing expert by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, is an accredited Green Roof Professional, and past Director of Education for RCI Ontario Chapter.
