Continuing Education Workshop

Exploring the "Missing Middle"
Strategies for Building Mixed-Income, Multi-Generational Communities

Thursday, October 18th
5:00 - 7:00 PM

Keynote speaker Karen Parolek of Opticos Design, Inc. will explore "missing middle housing" as a potential strategy for diversifying housing options to meet changing demands of major consumer groups (i.e. millennials and baby boomers) and expanding affordable, walkable living opportunities, especially in communities experiencing gentrification.  Missing middle housing describes home types such as duplexes, triplexes, and accessory dwelling units that were once common in neighborhoods across the country, but are rarely built today.  Parolek will also highlight barriers that developers face when trying to build missing middle housing types and provide examples of communities (in the Southeast and nationally) working successfully to eliminate those barriers.
