Sustainability and sustainable development are at the core of the chemical industry’s long-term plans.  Environmental and sustainability challenges facing Louisiana and the southeast United States are significant and require education, research, and planning for the future.  LSU and other universities in Louisiana are major suppliers of the educated workforce for these industries.  However, there is not a significant collaboration in sustainability education and research and development between the chemical industry and these institutions.

LSU School of the Coast & Environment’s Department of Environmental Sciences, the LSU Department of Chemical Engineering, the LSU Office of Research & Economic Development, with support from Albemarle, Albemarle Foundation, BASF, Belle Terre Consultants, and UBS Financial, are sponsoring a one day workshop addressing the grand challenges and research needs for long term sustainability of the chemical industry. The goal of the workshop is to bring experts from industry and academia together for identifying short term and long term challenges, discussing opportunities, and exploring the path to closer collaboration between industry and Louisiana’s system of higher education.

Speakers are leading experts in chemical and pharmaceutical industries, academia, and the Green Chemistry Institute of the American Chemical Society.  Workshop presentations will:

  • Introduce key concepts and challenges pertinent to key Louisiana Chemical Industries
  • Discuss materials chemistry and technology for a sustainable future
  • Examine sustainability programs at key representative corporations at the national level
  • Present strategies and implementation tools developed by the Green Chemistry Institute, American Chemical Society
  • Demonstrate the use of mitigation strategies for sustainable site restoration and re-development
  • Discuss the role universities play in sustainable industry development and maintenance
