Getting Creative with Benefits Programs in a Competitive Employment Market

Given today's historically low unemployment rate, savvy organizations understand that investing in their employees is more important than ever. In this breakfast brief, we will hear from two professionals who offer fresh thinking and a creative approach to benefits programs that can help attract and retain employees.

Dr. Oren Gersten, MD will talk about a new concept called direct primary care. Rather than traditional health insurance coverage, for a set monthly fee employees can have direct access to primary care services like office visits. He brings a unique perspective, having worked in both the traditional healthcare system as well as the growing field of direct primary care.

Adam Pratt, of Ameritas will discuss BenefitEd, which offers student loan repayment and education funding programs that employers can provide as additional benefits to hire and retain employees. These benefits help employees to pay down student loan debt or save for future education expenses.

About the Presenters:

Dr. Oren Gersten is a board-certified family doctor who brings his passion for caring for people and building community to Portland Direct Primary Care. Raised in the Rocky Mountains of Montana and Wyoming, he developed a love for the outdoors, which eventually led him to Portland, Maine. He completed Medical School at the University of Washington, which is consistently ranked as the top medical school for training primary care doctors. He chose Maine Medical Center in Portland for residency due to its excellent reputation for training well rounded family doctors who are ready to take on any challenge. During residency he also completed an extra 200-hour integrative medicine curriculum, which trains physicians to look at the whole person and acknowledges the incredible healing power of complementary approaches to health in addition to traditional western medical approaches. He founded Portland Direct Primary Care with the mission of creating an environment where excellent communication between the patient and their doctor leads to understanding of personal health and empowerment to change lives for the better.

Adam Pratt is a 20+ year veteran of the employee benefits industry in Maine. He began in at Unum as a senior underwriter in 1997, launched his ancillary benefits sales career with Standard Insurance Company in 2001, and later moved to Sun Life in 2012 and to Ameritas in 2014. He attended USM for both his BA and MBA degrees, and has continued to round-out his knowledge while earning multiple industry-related certifications, including SPHR.  Adam enjoys consulting with brokers and employers to help them to secure the best coverage at the lowest possible cost. In his spare time, he likes golfing, boating, fishing, hiking and skiing. He lives in Yarmouth with his wife Laurie, son Wes, and Rhodesian Ridgeback Blue.
