Dawn Lawien

Dawn Lawien has been working in the diagnostic imaging and medical device industries since 1986. Starting out in the Marketing Communications department at GE Healthcare (then GE Medical Systems), her main responsibility was developing and selling marketing materials to hospitals who were promoting their MRI scanners, a relatively new and unknown technology at the time, to patients and referring physicians. Due to economic downsizing, Dawn went on to start her own company – Proofreading Plus, Inc.  At that time, companies were hiring people to proofread documents because spell check didn’t exist yet!  Through her connections at GE, Dawn was invited to provide software testing for the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and nuclear medicine modalities for GE as an independent contractor.

In between software releases Dawn continued to increase her knowledge by learning desktop publishing. Bringing all of those skills together, she was invited to start writing operator manuals for PET and hybrid PET/CT scanners. Eventually she said good-bye to the corporate life to offer technical writing to smaller manufacturers of medical devices and post-processing software.

Dawn lives in Waukesha with her two, beautiful teenage daughters, three cats, a snake and a bearded dragon. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Carroll College.  In addition, she is a board member for the Waukesha Citizens Police Academy Association and enjoys volunteering in the community and at her children’s school.  Never one to rest, she’s starting a new small business making and selling her own handcrafted soaps, candles and other products through Etsy and local small shops and salons.

It will describe Spanish form and functions within various situations and will offer examples, solutions, and tips to deal with the most common issues when creating a document or a marketing piece in Spanish. The presentation will explain standardization and will offer practical examples.

In this day and age of shrinking budgets and expanding markets it’s more important than ever that writing be clear and concise without adding unnecessary expense to the cost of translation. Has a boss or client ever complained to you about those “few, easy” changes costing too much money to translate?
