About Literacy Volunteers

Literacy Volunteers – HBPL, an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America, provides a vital service in the Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, and surrounding communities by pairing tutors with adult learners for one-on-one English tutoring.

Literacy Volunteers has two programs to help adults and families develop the necessary English skills to communicate with their children, doctors, employers, neighbors, friends, and many others. Adult Literacy at Huntington Beach Public Library continues to grow as more and more adults realize the need to improve their literacy skills. Family Literacy at Oak View Branch Library supports the literacy efforts of parents to help them learn to read with their children in English.

Literacy Volunteers is a program of success stories – no matter how large or small the success may seem, each one is a triumph for our students and keeps them on the path to becoming better speakers, readers and writers. As our students develop their English skills they are able to improve their lives and contribute to the community. Our students have passed driving exams, gotten their GEDs, filled out job applications, been promoted at work, become accredited in their field, and become United States citizens.
