Finding Compassion in Medicine

A Workshop for physicians, medical students, and other healthcare providers.

Tuesday, April 12th, 6:00 - 8:00pm

$10 admission includes catered dinner

This session will provide insights regarding the efficacy of different methods of connecting directly with colleagues in clinical practice. This process develops improved communications and collegiality and can improve our overall ability to work harmoniously together to improve our own patient care and personal experience.

Practioners have heard of the concepts of self-realization, self-exploration and self-knowledge. Many are too busy to appreciate the benefits of personal exploration and growth, to take time, sit up and experience mindfulness practices.

Stress and Burnout critically alters our lives  and our abilities in caring for patients. Connecting with colleagues and patients is challenging. This workshop on mindfulness options and techniques further explores  personal and professional success to improve patient safety and enhance mutual joy at work. These practice techniques expand healthy options available for colleagues undergoing manifestations of stress and burnout.

Explore methods to improve  health, well-being, clinical performance, and interpersonal relationships while actively being engaged in compassionately helping others.  Learn the art of wisdom and resilience at work. The seminar relates practice to illuminate the dynamic synergy of authentic contemplative activities:Sitting practice, narrative engagement and small group activities have been used for years in teaching medical students and physicians all over the world.

The session is developed after years of teaching doctors ,students and nurses the art of healing through the work of the "Healers Art",a course for medical students  developed by Rachel  Naomi Remen MD.

WORKSHOP PRESENTER AND FACILITATOR:  Dr. Kenneth J. Sapire.

My interest in Mindfulness and Compassion has been informed by many personal experiences over the last 10 years.  I have been interested in finding meaning in medicine and through my teaching experience of the Healers Art program for Baylor College of Medicine and University of Texas medical students my understanding of this work has been transformative for my practice.  Together with various classes and teachings we have been able to use this information to educate practitioners and students alike in using their own experiences to connect more compassionately while with the people they care for.  The rewards personally, professionally and for our patients have been satisfying and I am encouraged that this type of work will enable us to continue to practice good medicine for all.
