Join us for an introduction to the scientific research on the effects of the practice of meditation on the physiology of the brain and body.

Learn how various breathing techniques affect the heart and the nervous system. And discover the role of meditation on structural and functional changes in the brain and the endocrine and nervous systems. We will explore the importance of the sound produced by mantra and the effects of mantra on mood.

Presenter: Julie K. Staples, Ph.D., (Guru Parkash Kaur) is the Research Director at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C. where her research focuses on the effectiveness of mind-body modalities with an emphasis on war-related posttraumatic stress. Dr. Staples is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine and part-time faculty at Saybrook University where she teaches in the Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Mind-Body Medicine graduate programs. She is also a certified Kundalini yoga teacher. She received her doctorate in Cell and Molecular Biology at St. Louis University.


Continuing Medical Education:  This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the New Mexico Medical Society (NMMS) through the joint sponsorship of the New Mexico Medical Review Association (NMMRA) and Guru Ram Das Center. NMMRA is accredited by the NMMS to provide Continuing Medical Education for physicians.

6.5 continuing education credits are available for certified yoga instructors through Yoga Alliance and IKYTA. Attendance for full duration of the course is required to obtain certificate of completion.
