Expand your business! Become qualified as a Tree Risk Assessment professional. Plan to join us for 2 days of indoor/outdoor instruction followed by an indoor/outdoor exam on the 3rd day.

This inaugural TRAQ class and exam will be open to Florida Chapter members only. In order to register at the Member Price you MUST be a member of BOTH the Florida Chapter and International ISA. All prerequisites for registering will be reviewed and your registration will be finalized via email.

Registration opens at noon on May 10, 2013. Space is limited to 40 people; registration will be on a first-come-first-serve basis; registration will close on June 19, 2013 (or when filled). We do expect this class to fill quickly.

Have you read the TRAQ handbook?
During the registration process you will be asked to agree to the terms and conditions in the handbook; if you do not agree with them you cannot take the course and exam. Find the handbook at:

If you feel you qualify to take the course because you hold a credential or have completed a program of study that is not listed on page 3 of the handbook, you can download the form to submit an appeal; the appeals process could take several months. Find the appeals form:

Included in your registration:
   -   course registration

   -   lunch, beverages and snacks for Tuesday and Wednesday

Travel and lodging is on your own.

What is required to bring to the class:
   -   a government-issued photo ID card, such as a driver's license, passport, or military ID
   -   your study manual and workbook
(these will be mailed to you prior to the class)
   -   pencils and clipboard for taking notes and completing worksheets
   -   hard hat and safety vest
   -   rain gear (just in case!) - come prepared to spend parts of each day outdoor; dress
        accordingly for the weather.

Meet the Instructors:

  • Norm Easey
    Norm Easey has been an active member of ISA for 29 years and is a charter member of the Florida Chapter ISA.  He has been active in urban forest management in Florida since receiving his bachelors’ degree in Forestry/Resource Management in 1980 from the University of Wisconsin. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Florida Chapter ISA. He also has a part-time urban forestry consulting practice where he specializes in tree risk assessment and urban forest management. For 18 years Norm was the Forestry Manager for Sarasota County, Florida and has also been a County Forester with the Florida Division of Forestry. Mr. Easey is a past Chairman of the Florida Urban Forestry Council and is a long-standing member of Society of American Foresters and the Society of Municipal Arborists.
  • Tom Smiley
    Dr. Smiley is a plant pathologist and soil scientist at the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory, as well as an adjunct professor of Urban Forestry at Clemson University.  Recent studies have included work on mycorrhizae, tree bolting, tree risk assessment, fertilization, lightning protection, soil compaction, tree growth regulators, and other soil amendments.  Dr. Smiley has also worked as an urban forestry consultant and East Coast Manager for a major consulting firm as well working as a Research Plant Pathologist for a large wholesale Florida Nursery.  He is currently chair of the ISA BMP  committee and founding chair of the ISA BCMA committee.

An Overview:

You will have the privilege of learning Tree Risk Assessment from Norm Easey and Tom Smiley, two of the committee members who helped create and fine tune this new ISA Qualification. You will benefit from their thorough presentation of the Tree Assessment Manual accompanied with workbook activities. Indoor instruction will be followed-up with hands-on outdoor demonstrations that will walk you through the skills you need to know to become a knowledgeable Tree Risk Assessor. The 2-day class will conclude with the exam on the 3rd day. You will learn:

   -   Tree biology and mechanics
   -  Tree inspection and assessment
   -   Data analysis and risk categorizaion
