Language, Culture and Medicine: Conversational English for Researchers


In this course, students will gain experience summarizing news stories, leading discussions, and participating in conversations on a variety of medical research topics of interest to the general public. Assignments will include listening to news stories on National Public Radio and presentations on TED.com to prepare for class discussions. Students will also practice presenting their own research in a format that will engage people outside their specialty areas.

Learning objectives:

  • Improve conversation skills by using everyday English to discuss a variety of topics related to medical research and health.
  • Ask questions to clarify or get more information about a topic.
  • Make clear presentations by explaining complex concepts in simple language.

Prerequisite: High intermediate to advanced level of English proficiency and willingness to actively participate in discussions.

Location:  Main NIH campus, Building 10, FAES Academic Center, B-1 Level, Bethesda, MD 20892.  All classes will be held in Classroom B1C206 with the exception of Thursday, May 23rd and Thursday, June 6th when class will be held in Classroom B1C211.
