Children in Florida’s child welfare (foster care) system have a myriad of legal rights that affect every aspect of their lives.  All too often the children who are supposed to benefit from those rights have no idea that they exist, and therefore no ability to advocate for their own needs.  Likewise, the adults who assist youth in care seldom understand the full panoply of children’s rights.

Understanding their rights is a top priority for youth in care as determined by Florida Youth SHINE, an organization of current and former foster youth.  This session will review the basic rights, the sources of those rights, and how to find them.

The session will include a discussion by youth about why it is important for them to understand their rights and how they became empowered to assert their rights.  They will share the tools they use to help their peers understand their legal rights.
