Board / Staff Relationship

For organizations with multiple staff, getting board and staff members clear on their respective jobs – and how they complement each other – may be one of the biggest challenges.  Why is it important? Staff often wonder what the board does. Conversely, board members who hire a terrific executive director may find themselves over-reliant on their talented staff leader.  How can you prevent non-productive board-staff dynamics in your organization, and foster an equitable, inclusive environment that supports the success of every person in the organization? Come with your positive tips, ideas, and horror stories, and everything in between.  This will be a problem-solving session (a tiny bit of griping will be allowed).

Note that this training is designed for larger nonprofits, though everyone is welcome to participate.

Since 2007, Allison Handler has worked with nonprofit organizations and local governments on strategic planning, organizational assessment, business development, fundraising planning and financial feasibility. She loves nonprofit management consulting: helping groups - sometimes on the fly - work through a thorny patch to see a clear road ahead. She knows the challenges firsthand, having been in the nonprofit and public sector trenches. As a nonprofit board leader, executive director and staff member, she has wrestled with the same kinds of issues and questions as many of Solid Ground's clients.
