Basic Winter Institute

For more than 66 years teacher (regular education, special education, ELL, reading, speech/language, and Title 1), paraprofessionals, home educators, parents, and even grandparents have taken our training courses, which are designed to help those who struggle unexpectedly learning to read, write, and spell.

The Orton-Gillingham Approach, as taught by highly qualified Reading Center instructors, employs comprehensive, scientifically based reading instruction. During the Institutes, participants will learn the approach, the structure of the English language,and apply what's been learned by planning and teaching actual lessons. The training is intense but extremely valuable and life changing. Allow time in your schedule for a training of this magnitude.

• Enrollment is limited. Sign up today to learn this valuable approach for your professional development or for your personal enrichment.  
• Graduate credits are available through Saint Mary's University, Winona, Minnesota. You must have a four year degree in order to apply for graduate credits.  Graduate course credit is in addition to course tuition and is the responsibility of the student.  If interested in graduate credit or extended stay accommodations, contact The Reading Center.
• A certificate of successful completion will be presented to those who satisfactorily complete required course work and pass the examinations.
• To maintain your spot in this class: Payment of full tuition is due at the time of registration online. Payment due in full or within one week of The Reading Center's receipt of this form if paying by mail.  If you wish to set up a payment plan, please contact our bookkeeper, Gade Grinnell at 507-288-5271.
• Partial scholarships are available for qualified applicants.  See our website for a scholarship application.  
• The Reading Center reserves the right to cancel (and refund tution) for classes if not enough registrations are received.

The 25 Class Dates and times are as follows:  

Thursdays (5:30-8:30pm): January 18, 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15

Saturdays (8:00am-2:30pm): January 20, 27, February 3, 10, 17, 24, March 3, 10

Mondays (5:30pm-8:30pm): January 22, 29, February 5, 12, 19, 26, March 5, 12

Storm date: March 18

Training Location: The Reading Center, 847 5th St. NW, Rochester, MN  55901

Tuition: $1,595 (After January 2, 2018 tuition will be $1,895)

Course Materials: $125 Basic Institute Reference Manual and $45 Basic Institute Language Toolkit, payable at registration
