A Viewing of "Journey into Dyslexia" - Film Screening and Discussion
Join us for an evening with education and literacy organizations to learn more about Dyslexia. Following the film, we will have a Q&A Panel.
"Journey into Dyslexia" is a film by Academy AwardŽ-winning filmmakers Alan and Susan Raymond.
The film present profiles of dyslexic students and adults who share their experiences of struggling in school ... and succeeding in life. Individual journeys into dyslexia are told by students ranging from second grade to college levels, as well as entrepreneur Steve Walker of New England Pellet, inventor Ben Foss of Intel, author Jonathan Mooney, consumer advocate Erin Brockovitch, and Nobel Laureate Dr. Carol Greider. Each share their frustrations with being misunderstood by teachers and friends and the emotional impact this learning disability had on their lives.
Experts profied in the film provide information and perspective on a learning disability that is estimated to affect one out of five people:
• Dr. Guinevere Eden, Director of Child Development at Georgetown University, explains the causes of dyslexia.
• Dr. Mary Anne Wolf, author of "Proust and the Squid", describes the difficulty of learning to read for everyone.
• Carl Schramm, CEO of The Kauffman Foundation, discusses a recent study showing that 35% of all entrepreneurs are dyslexic.
Prior to the start of the film and after, local organizations will be present to answer questions and provide information. Participating organizations include: International Dyslexia Association, Upper Midwest Branch (IDA-UMB), Decoding Dyslexia -SD, The USD Scottish Rite Children's Clinic in Sioux Falls, WILD (Wisdom Inspired by Learning Differences) - a new mentoring organization for SD youth.
This event is co-sponsored by the International Dyslexia Association, Upper Midwest Branch (IDA-UMB), Decoding Dyslexia -SD and the Brandon Valley School District.
The event is free and open to the public. Registration is requested so we can make arrangements for adequate seating.
For an administrative fee of $10, certificates of attendance will be provided for use by attendees in obtaining continuing education hours or units.
