Burnout and Compassion Fatigue: Self Care and Moral Dilemmas

Please join us for a 2 hour continuing education training approved for Social Workers, Counselors AND Psychologists.

Cost to attend: $40

Everyone within the caring professions at one time or another experiences burnout and fatigue related to the ongoing stressors of our chosen professions. Many workshops focus on the personal nature of the impact of hearing and witnessing the painful stories experienced by those who seek our help. By focusing on education and self care, these workshops are helpful as we seek ways to manage our own distress.
But stressors go beyond the stories we hear, and as important as self care is, solely focusing on this can block from view the reciprocal nature of our work. From the work with those whom we just don't like, to those we genuinely do, the challenge to our moral sense can be intense. Missing the gifts we receive from those we serve can impede both quality of our work and distance us from our social self.

Finally, we also live in our own local worlds in which factories may shut down, affordable housing may be substandard, healthcare is unaffordable or unavailable, and the 24 hour news cycle reminds us daily to be very afraid. And the agency for which we work now has one more form needed to be completed which we know adds nothing to the betterment of that world.
It is in all these contexts and maybe more, that our own anxieties and depressions live as we do the work of caring. This workshop will focus on those contexts. The goal is to challenge us to think of the burnout we experience as an opportunity to take action. Including self care, self exploration, and social action.

Learning Objectives
1) Think about burnout and compassion fatigue in a social context
2) Challenge ourselves to act to alleviate fatigue
3) Challenge us to continually educate ourselves about the social context of the anxiety and depression we seek to alleviate
