Come see M.anifest, Maria Isa, and Mayda at "Voices for Justice," a Headwaters benefit concert! Hear these great local musicians and learn more about the social justice work Headwaters supports. The concert begins at 8:00,pm with doors and a DJ set by Bradley Henegar at 7:00pm. The MC for the evening will be May Lee Yang, playwright, prose writer, poet, and performance artist. Drink specials will be available! Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or beforehand online. Proceeds of the event will go towards Headwaters' community grants to support grassroots organizations.

M.anifest is a true original. Born and raised in Accra, Ghana, the charismatic Hip-Hop artist migrated to the Twin Cities where he was voted City Pages Songwriter of the year after his critically acclaimed 2007 debut "manifestations." He has been described as an artist with "an incredible gift" (the run off groove) who possesses "the kind of assured, joyful, ruminative voice that made Mos Def into Hollywood's favorite conscious-rap star" (City Pages).

The Ghanaian native has stacked up an impressive resume: including on stage collaborations with Femi Kuti, Damon Albarn (Gorillaz), Amadou and Miriam, Mick Jones (The clash), Tony Allen, the Noisettes and many more. Equal parts charming and skillful, the Ghanaian MC is captivating on stage and on record. He is currently one of 3 artists being featured in a documentary, "We Rock Long Distance," which partly focuses on the MC and his connection with his grandfather, Prof J.H. Nketia: one of the most revered African composers and ethnomusicologist. With a rare ability to effortlessly mold transnational experiences into accessible yet highly lyrical songs over African inspired rhythms, the Ghanaian MC is one to watch.

Born and raised in the Twin Cities to NuyoRican parents, emcee, singer, and songwriter Maria Isa is recognized for her dedication towards celebrating her cultural diversity through music and political activism. In 1992 she started her performing arts education at El Arco Iris Center for Arts, forming Raices in 2002 with other advanced students to conserve their ancestral Puerto Rican folklore music.

Following her nomination in 2006 for the Minnesota Music Award's "Best Hip-Hop Artist" category, Isa released her first independent album M.I. Split Personalities in May of 2007 and has been promoting her music in the Twin Cities, Puerto Rico and nationally.

Maria Isa celebrates leadership and cultural pride. She represents a voice for girls on the block wanting to make a difference for "la gente," while jamming to a soulful vibe.

Mayda LOVES, writes, produces, records, plays, and sings music. She has written and played with the Sugar Divas, Jellybean Johnson of THE TIME, Chance Howard of THE TIME and PRINCE, Phil Hansen, Word For Word, the Boy Sopranos, Soul Asylum, and many more. Her music has gained local and national recognition. Featured on The Rachael Ray Show, Good Morning America, Radio K, Channel 4, KARE 11, and mentioned by writer Jim Walsh of The Mad Ripple, Mayda represents a new wave of Twin Cities music. Packed in a 4'10" frame, Mayda rocks the full on pop singer songwriter with a twist of Minneapolis funk.

Bradley Henegar a.k.a S L E E P E R is an established local DJ/Musician hailing from Minneapolis by way of Detroit. His musical aesthetic permeates an era steeped in both nostalgia and capricious grooves. Whether conjuring old school hip hop favorites, or the deepest Northern Soul tracks, you're sure to enjoy the ride. Bradley, AKA S L E E P E R has been working within the music scene all his life in different projects and incarnations. He's been DJing and making beats around the Twin Cities for the last 5 years. Arrive at Voices for Justice at 7:00 to hear Bradley play a DJ set!
