Have you noticed that our local tree canopy is under attack? It’s hard to miss. Every day we experience the onslaught of pests like the Emerald Ash Borer and the Asian Long Horned Beetle. It’s estimated that up to 30% of our trees will be gone in ten years.
Green Umbrella’s Land Management and Watershed Action teams, in support of Taking Root’s objective to plant 2 million trees by 2020, are jointly focusing their efforts on the reforestation of strategic riparian zone sites in the tri-state region. Partnering with the Northern Kentucky University Ecological Stewardship Institute, this effort will be launched at the 2014 Green Umbrella Land and Water Forum Taking Root in the Riparian Zone.
The Forum’s morning session will be devoted to presentations of riparian planting and management best practices by land and watershed management professionals. Lunch will be provided by the NKU Ecological Stewardship Institute. In the afternoon, we will tour representative riparian zone sites to reinforce concepts introduced during the morning session. The Forum will also be an occasion to launch initial riparian zone reforestation projects.
