Becoming the Quakers the World Needs: Northern Yearly Meeting Information Session

Please join us to learn about FWCC – how it is relevant to modern Quakers and to global Quakerism and how you could participate! This information session will be hosted by Chuck Schobert and Marybeth Neal for Northern YM members to learn about FWCC and what representatives from Yearly Meetings do.

More Information

Diane Zappas of the FWCC Section of the Americas Office will present a brief introduction to FWCC to provide a better understanding of the past, present and possible future FWCC, followed by sharing stories by your hosts and others present, and  Q and A.

Chuck Schobert is a member of Madison Meeting and has been heavily involved with FWCC (Friends World Committee for Consultation) since the World Gathering in Kenya, 2012. He is currently serving as one of the FWCC representatives from Northern as well as on several FWCC committees. Much of his recent work with FWCC has focused on organizing “consultations”, dealing with a variety of topics, much like this upcoming information session. In his work with FWCC, he has had a variety of opportunities to travel, both in the ministry and to large meetings around the world. This has taught him a lot and given him some interesting stories to tell. Chuck will be just returning from a trip to El Salvador and will share more about that in this session.

Marybeth Neal grew up in a Quaker family, first as a member of the Ann Arbor Michigan Friends Meeting and later as a member of Twin Cities Friends Meeting.  Her first experience as a FWCC representative was in her 20’s for Lake Erie Yearly Meeting.  Attending the 1983 FWCC world triennial in Kenya, she was instrumental in FWCC’s decision to empower young adult Friends to hold a World Gathering of Young Friends, which was held in 1985 in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Marybeth has a special concern to create opportunities for younger Quakers to develop their leadership and career paths “to mind the Light and let one’s life speak”. After raising a family and a career in applied anthropology, in 2019, she again served as an FWCC  representative, this time from Northern Yearly Meeting. Marybeth then became the regional coordinator for the FWCC Northern High Plains Region and currently serves as the clerk of the Representative Engagement Committee.
