Issues in Children's Mental Health Series Conference

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness and Suffolk County Department of Community Mental Hygiene Services have collaborated with

Dr. Pamela Hurst-Della Pietra, founder and   President of Children and Screens: The Institute of Digital Media and Child Development.  She created the Institute as the principle vehicle through which she and others could address three urgent questions:

1. How is digital media enhancing or impairing children’s ability to live happy, healthy, and productive lives?
2. How are years of electronically mediated interactions shaping children’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development?
3. What should we do about it?

Join Dr. Pamela Hurst-Della Pietra as she presents her research and moderates a panel of researchers and clinicians  to present on the state of current research on the understanding of digital media's influence on children and adolescents psychological, emotional, social and behavioral development.

The Panel will include the following topics:

  • Addiction (focusing on internet/gaming/social media addiction)
  • Cyberbullying
  • Depression/Anxiety
  • Violent Video Gaming
  • Sexting

Prominent researchers/clinicians will report on recent studies and interventions that look at the impact of digital media on children's minds, brains, and behavior as well as on their social/emotional/physical development at critical stages: infants and toddlers, early childhood, tweens and teens will be considered.  Conference participants will learn about what science can tell us about such important concerns as violent video games, online addiction, and media in early childhood.

Learning Objectives

Participants can expect to learn:

1. What has the research revealed about how digital media affects children and adolescents' psychological, emotional, social and behavioral health?

2.  How can professionals screen families/youth with respect to their media interactions; what interventions show promise?

3.  What interdisciplinary teams/approaches are encouraged when professionals are faced with media-related issues in a clinical setting?

4. What tools and resources exist for professionals to get more information and assistance?
