We all live in a society focused on food, weight and body perfection. But for many, their relationship to food and their bodies can become such an obsession that it interferes with their functioning—and even become symptomatic of a severe illness.  This 3-hour presentation will introduce the complexities of disordered eating versus full-blown eating disorders in clinical practice.  Factors related to the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorders, and body dysmorphia will be discussed.

Who Should Attend:

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to recognize the difference between disordered eating and full-blown eating disorder symptomatology, including the classification of eating disorders according to the DSM-5.
  • Participants will be able to understand eating disorder etiology, intrapsychic factors, and treatment approaches.
  • Participants will discuss the cultural and familial influences on body image and their role in the development of eating and body image disturbances.
  • Participants will identify specific clinical intervenions for helping individuals with eating and body image issues.
  • Participants will recognize gender differences in the presentation of disordered eating and eating disorders.
  • Participants will identify their own food, weight, and body issues and understand how these may effect the therapeutic alliance.
