Legislative Workshop for the Media 

Please note that this event is open only to members of SCPA, SCBA and AP. 

The annual Legislative Workshop for the Media will preview the 2017 legislative session. Make plans to join your state legislators as they discuss various topics including the budget, pension reform, DOT reform and the gas tax, public education funding and the Abbeville lawsuit, tax reform, gun control, ethics reform, FOIA reform and more.

This event will take place Thursday, Jan. 5, from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., at the Solomon Blatt Building on the Statehouse grounds in Columbia.

We recommend this event for editors, new and veteran Statehouse reporters, editorial writers, city editors and assignment editors.

The event is a one-stop shop or credentialed media to interview key members of both the House and Senate. Confirmed panelists will include Sens. Sean Bennett, Chip Campsen, Tom Davis, Greg Hembree, Brad Hutto, Marlon Kimpson, Shane Massey, John Matthews and Vince Sheheen, Reps. Rita Allison, Mike Anthony, Gilda Cobb-Hunter, Mandy Powers Norrell, Tommy Pope, Todd Rutherford, Gary Simrill, Eddie Tallon, Bill Taylor and Senate Minority Leader Nikki Setzler. More panelists will be announced as they are confirmed.

Les Boles, Director of the Office of State Budget, will give an overview of revenue and spending projections for the coming year.

Lee Harter, Executive Editor of The Times and Democrat, will moderate. All discussions are on the record.

Lunch will be provided. 

This workshop is sponsored by S.C. Press Association, S.C. Broadcasters Association and the Associated Press.

The cost to attend this event is $60 per person for members of SCPA, SCBA and the AP.

The final day to register is Monday, Jan. 2, 2017.
