REGISTRATION CONTINUED

Description:

Play therapists and other human service practitioners often are called upon to provide crisis intervention counseling and support to children and families after various traumatic events such as hurricanes, fires, tornadoes, and earthquakes as well as following shootings, suicides, terrorist attacks, and accidental deaths of teachers or peers. Providing mental health services under these circumstances requires special skills, including the use of play therapy when helping children. This Workshop will cover the basic procedures of disaster response, including the use of crisis intervention play therapy methods to help ease the typical post-traumatic responses of fear, anxiety, and mourning of affected children and families. Strategies and techniques such as the use of psychological first aid, debriefing, and interdisciplinary collaboration will be illustrated in examples, as well as specific play therapy methods involving drawing, music and movement. The use of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy will also be discussed.

The use of self-care methods will be demonstrated as essential for both victims and helpers, all of whom face significant mental and emotional turmoil as they attempt to cope with the numerous devastating circumstances of traumatic events.

Additionally, strategies to intervene with parents and family members will be incorporated. Come prepared for an information rich and exciting learning experience.

Objectives: After the training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the protocols for disaster intervention as established by organizations dedicated to disaster management.

  • State ethical and professional considerations to maintain when providing play therapy crisis intervention during a traumatic event.

  • Describe the use of psychological first aid, debriefing, crisis intervention play therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy.

  • State how a child’s age and cognitive development will affect their response to trauma and loss experiences.

  • Demonstrate at least three play therapy methods to help children and youth cope after traumatic experiences.

  • Identify several calming methods for self-care to help children, families, and themselves cope in the after-math of traumatic events in play therapy.
