Abuse of older vulnerable adults is an egregious, underreported crime. The abuse may be in the form of physical, emotional, sexual or financial abuse. Victims may be vulnerable and incapable of protecting themselves and/or their assets. Elderly victims experience many losses – financial, physical, health – due to abuse, often resulting in premature death. This presentation will focus on the Hidden Faces of Elder Abuse, the types of abuses, and the aging network’s response to the hidden problem of older adults who have fallen prey to abuse. Attendees will be provided the historical perspective of abuse of older persons and prevention efforts within the United States.
Actual case realties will be woven into the presentation discussing the types of abuses, and the community, families and practitioner's response to abuse, neglect and/or exploitation. It will explore the historical milestones of the elder abuse field, resources, policies, concepts, and national, state and local responses and emerging issues in the field of elder abuse prevention. The presentation will also address roles of professionals in education and tools to help elders, families, and practitioners in planning ahead to prevent abuse of older populations.
