Intimate Partner Violence in Later Life: Building Resilience and Recovery

This webinar will discuss intimate partner violence in later life and how to build resilience and recovery for victims. Those 65 and older in US represent 40.4 million people. Estimates suggest 1 in 10 older adults have been victimized in some way (Acierno et. al. 2010). As in younger years, the perpetrator is most often a family member or trusted caregiver (WHO, 2018). Incidents of violence are usually a combination of more than one form of abuse. Studies of IPV in the US have not yet examined older adult populations per se. However, studies looking at IPV across the lifespan estimated that 1.4% of women and men aged 55+ were involved in IPV. In Europe, 28% of women older than 60 report some type of maltreatment and 50% of these were IPV (Luoma et al. 2011). Diverse patterns of IPV occur in older adult relationships. Three patterns have been identified based on the timing of when violence enters the victim's life. These patterns include IPV grown old, dysfunctional relationships under stress, and violence from a new partner. When violence enters an individual's life has significant implications in terms of the number and types of barriers to change as well as the number and types of strengths to use in building resilience (Acierno et. al. 2017). Three clinical cases will be used to illustrate these three dynamic patterns and how they influence: barriers to intervention, and strategies for building resilience and recovery into intervention plans.

Learning Objectives:
