Teaching the Ethical Foundations of Economics

Why do we teach ethics in an economics class?  The lessons pose interesting questions about efficiency and equity in health care, the meaning of justice, why ethical conduct is essential to the scientific process, why markets need ethical standards, the moral limits of markets, the ethics of sweatshop labor, the social responsibility of business and the ethics of the sale of human organs.  The active-learning lessons help students develop critical-thinking skills necessary to explore economic and public-policy issues within a wider moral context.

 John Morton - Former vice president of program development at the national Council for Economic Education.  He chaired the advisory board of The Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition for nine years and has written over 40 widely used publications of instructional activities for high school economics courses.

 Jonathan Wight – Professor of Economics, Robins School of Business, University of Richmond.

 Professor Wight’s areas of expertise include ethics of capitalism, economics of globalization and Adam Smith.
