The Adventure Trio Comes to Oregon!

Welcome to the Adventure Trio, a family of 3 on 2 BMW GS motorcycles that chose to take back their lives and ride away from their “normal” suburban life.  On September 13th, 2014, Terry, Sandy and their then 13-year-old son, Jack, put their lives on 2-wheels and headed out for a 15-month journey through Mexico, Central and South America.  Why?  It was time for a change, something other than play dates, book clubs, and the 90-hour work weeks.  In the year leading up to their departure, they sold their home of 15 years, relocated to a smaller town, downsized their belongings, and left a business of over 20+ years.  Their goal was to spend quality time together as a family learning about the world and her people beyond the media.  The media does a very good job at placing fear of the unknown into our lives, and it was time for the Borden family to learn for themselves.

The Borden’s have traveled as a family on motorcycles since Jack was 5 and big enough to wear proper protective gear.  What started as weekend camping trips turned into 10 days along the Oregon coast, then 2 weeks into Canada, 3 weeks across the states, and so on.  Their family motto is “Don’t ask why, ask why not”.  For years, the Borden family had been talking about doing more than treks other than North America, something greater than staying within their borders.  They had danced around the notion of completely changing their trajectory in life and heading south.  So, in May of 2013, Terry asked his family, “If we don’t do this now, will we regret it in 10 years?”  Each family member answered, “Yes”.  The decision was made to flee the usual, and South America was their destination.

In their 60-minute talk, the Borden’s share what life was like before they left as well as how they came to the decision to leave their former lives.  Jack discusses how he chose world schooling (also known as unschooling) as his way to educate himself while on the road.    Photos and videos help to tell their story as they traveled off-road through the Peruvian Andes, camped along the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, and lived with a Mayan family in Guatemala.

This family adventure story is unlike any motorcycling travel journey.  The Borden’s prove that this type of family travel can be done and share with the audience why the world is meant to be explored with the entire family on two wheels.
