Working with the Experts:

From the B.E.S.T. Standards to Specially Designed Instruction Based Upon Classroom Curriculum

Online, Live Training for Florida Professionals Working with Students who are D/HH

RMTC-D/HH is pleased to host Monica Faherty from Rule the School to provide this two-part training on classroom-based intervention for students who are deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH). This service delivery approach takes the content presented in the general education classroom and uses it for explicit instructional activities specifically designed to close the achievement gap for students who are D/HH and remediate the skills necessary to achieve age- or cognitively-appropriate language and literacy developmental levels.

Dates: Attendance is required for both days.

October 9, 2020, 12 PM - 4 PM EST/ 11AM-3 PM CT

October 23, 2020, 12 PM - 4 PM EST/ 11AM-3 PM CT

Objectives:

 Upon completion of this 2-part series, participants will be able to:

  • explain the impact of varied hearing levels in four language/literacy areas: auditory skills, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and grammar and be able to explain what each area is, become familiar with resources and progress monitoring tools for each area, and develop appropriate IEP goals;

  • create a sequence to plan student sessions which include communication with other professionals, organizing materials, designing the lesson, monitoring the session, and collecting data; and

  • draft a session plan for one student on their caseload based on one story/book from their district’s ELA curriculum, including activities.

Agenda

This training will NOT be recorded. It is an online, live event.

This training will include the following:

  • a brief history of deaf education and current research to establish and justify best practices;

  • evaluation of remediation criteria analysis of classroom-based intervention and why teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing should be using this strategy;

  • application of this strategy to teach auditory skill development, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and grammar;

  • incorporation of tips and tricks to maximize instruction;

  • development of an IEP and instructional plan for a case study; and

  • development of an IEP, intervention plan, and lesson plans for a student on their caseload.

Participants will be expected to bring information on one student from his/her caseload that includes the following:

  • current testing results - both formal and informal (e.g., cognitive, receptive and expressive language, receptive and expressive vocabulary, phonological awareness, and reading diagnostic assessment data),

  • Current audiological,

  • current individual education plan (IEP), and

  • English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum materials.

Activities to Demonstrate Mastery of Training:

  1. Participants will develop an IEP for students from their caseload based on formal and informal testing results. Using a book/story from the district’s ELA curriculum, they will develop two activities and data sheets in each of the four language areas.

Technology Requirements:

Participants will need access to

  • a newer computer (no more than three to five years old),

  • a high-speed internet connection (Speedtest.net results should be over 5-10 Mbps.), and

  • a web camera with standard definition (480p or 360p) for effective participation.
