Writing Intensive
Creating a World in 800 Words or Less
In picture books, less is more. Learn how to build a rich world for readers in small word counts. In this intensive, you’ll try your hand at writing juicy verbs, creating repeating patterns, employing perfect similes and metaphors, and cutting story text until it becomes a perfect read-aloud.
About the Presenter:
Alexis O’Neill is the author of awarding-winning picture books including The Recess Queen, Loud Emily, The Worst Best Friend, Estela’s Swap and The Kite That Bridged Two Nations, a California Young Reader Medal nominee for 2016-2017. She served as the first director of education at the Museum of Ventura County, is an instructor for the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program, and was the SCBWI Regional Advisor for the Central-Coastal region for eighteen years. A veteran school visit presenter, Alexis shares the craft and business of author visits at SchoolVisitExperts.com as well as through her column in the SCBWI Bulletin, “The Truth About School Visits.” Before becoming a full-time author, Alexis taught elementary school and earned her Ph.D. in Teacher Education from Syracuse University. She is currently an active board member of the Ventura County Reading Association, the CLU-California Reading and Literature Project, and a dedicated supporter of the Simi Valley Friends of the Library. www.alexisoneill.com
